Neue Rolle für Kulturorte: "Common Saalbau"
Der Saalbau ist eine baukulturelle Schönheit der 1970er Jahre und sucht zugleich nach neuen Funktionen in der Stadt: Wie lässt sich mit diesem Erbe industrieller Urbanisierung umgehen und neue Formen von Koproduktion lokal etablieren? Der Saalbau Witten wurde 1975 eröffnet und ist ein Bespieltheater im Zentrum Wittens mit einem umliegenden Areal mit einer Gesamtfläche von etwa 39.700 m². Er gehört zum Kulturforum Witten, dem ehemaligen Kulturamt der Stadt. Der Theatersaal, als Herzstück des Saalbaus, bietet rund 800 Menschen Platz. Das Haus ist u.a. Veranstaltungsort der renommierten Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik und eines ganzjährigen Kultur- und Begegnungsprogramms von Musik, Comedy und Theater, neuem Zirkus sowie Clubkultur, Messen, Märkten und Kinderveranstaltungen. Damit der Saalbau auch in Zukunft für die Wittener Stadtgesellschaft da ist und seine Relevanz behält, sind in den nächsten Jahren umfangreiche Maßnahmen zur Entwicklung der Fläche mit Blick auf Klimaschutz und Klimafolgenanpassung sowie der programmatischen Neuausrichtung der Institution geplant.
Die Gestaltung des Areals als öffentliche Fläche folgt dem Prinzip, gemeinschaftlich Lebensräume für Menschen – und Tiere – zu erschaffen, um öffentliche Plätze partizipativ zu attraktiven Orten für Anwohner*innen und Besucher*innen zu machen. In diesem Sinne erfolgt die Umsetzung des Projektes in enger Partnerschaft mit lokalen Initiativen. Der Saalbau fungiert somit als Testfeld zur Installierung einer Transformationsarchitektur für urbane Koproduktion und kollaborative Verwaltung.
New roles for cultural venues: “Common Saalbau”
The topic of “Urban Commons” is booming in committed urban society and urban planning. Exemplary projects such as the urbanize festival in Vienna, the House of Statistics in Berlin or municipalist Barcelona reveal the timely range and use of the topic; as also publications like “The Rise of the Commons City” (Volont et al. 2022) show. For the German context a recently published guide to co-production (koopwohl.de) bundles contemporary efforts by public-common partnerships to make urban commons applicable in practice. Reason enough for us to take up the topic of “Urban Futures” at UWH and explore the possibilities of collective co-production for cultural venues in Witten: Common Saalbau?
The Saalbau hall is an architectural beauty of the 1970s and at the same time looking for new uses in the city: How can we deal with this legacy of industrial urbanization and establish new forms of co-production locally? Witten Saalbau was opened in 1975 and is a theater in the center of Witten with a surrounding area with a total area of 39,700 m². It belongs to the Kulturforum Witten, the city’s former cultural office. The theater hall, as the heart of the building, offers space for around 800 people. The house is, among other things, the venue for the renowned Witten Days for New Chamber Music and a year-round cultural and encounter program of music, comedy and theater, new circus and club culture, trade fairs, markets and children’s events. To ensure that the building continues to be there for Witten’s urban society in the future and retains its relevance, extensive measures are planned over the next few years to develop the area with respect to climate protection and adaptation as well as the programmatic realignment of the institution.
The design of the area as municipal property follows the principle of collaboratively creating spaces for people – and animals – in order to make urban spaces participatory and attractive places for residents and visitors. In this sense, the project is implemented in close partnership with local initiatives. Saalbau hall thus functions as lab for installing transformative architecture for urban co-production and collaborative administration.

– we offer 2 compact blocks of 2 days each (Friday to Saturday in April & June 2024)
– Academic Input regarding the state of urban research and analytical approaches based on European and German examples
– creative examination of possible urban futures: plenum and group work
– experimental work with text, photos, film, performance etc
– minimum reading effort between blocks and short presentation to the group (group work possible)
– individual grades and ECTS credits possible through subsequent homework
Seminar Goal
– overview on urban research and practices of urban commons in european/ german cities
– insights into the field of tension of community self-organization and urban coproduction: public, private, common
– exploration of creative strategies with regard to possible urban futures in Witten: Common Saalbau
