Marine Environment and Island Communities - An Excursion to Jersey (Channel Islands)

Stefan Huggenberger und weitere Dozierende
This excursion to Jersey is planned from Sep. 20th to 29th 2024 in cooperation with the Jersey International Centre of Advanced Studies (www.jicas.ac.je/), a postgraduate research institute that focuses on islands and island communities.
Jersey is the largest of the Channel Islands (UK) located in the transition zone between the Atlantic Ocean and the North Sea which makes it of special interest regarding flora and fauna in times of a rapidly changing climate. The coast is diversified so that students can study various costal habitats.
It is possible to reach Jersey by train and ferry so that the travel is relatively inexpensive with a minor CO2 footprint.

Stefan Huggenberger
As a lecturer for human anatomy and neuroanatomy at the UW/H and working on the comparative anatomy of whales and dolphins Stefan is looking for new concepts of teaching students ways of life-long learning, to stay curious, and thus to expand their academic and cultural horizons. Moreover, he has a strong background in zoology and marine biology. As such, he plans the main topic of the excursion regarding marine sciences.

Excursion including field work, museum’s visits, seminars and discussion rounds

Ziel der Veranstaltung

Students will be subjected to a sum of characteristics of life on small islands. These characteristics or peculiarities include, e.g., the way of dealing with the marine environment, small markets, their own laws based mainly on the island’s history. The study of the island’s community will teach alternative lifestyles and how humans cooperate successfully within closed communities with limited island’s resources.
All students and the two lecturers will stay in the same guest house (activity center) which includes social rooms and kitchen. Thus, students will experience the organization of daily life (daily rhythm, meals, transport etc.) as a team. Following this simple concept, trainings will be held to highlight the difference between management and leadership not only of interdisciplinary and heterogeneous teams but for everyday life and business.
We will join JICAS students (www.jicas.ac.je/) which is a highly international and interdisciplinary group. Here, students will come into contact with different foreign cultures, different topics of study as well as lifestyle alternatives.
The service of the activity center includes the organization of different water sports. Students will have the opportunity to test and to perform some of the typical local water sports such as stand-up paddling, snorkeling, outdoor swimming, rowing, kayaking, fishing, coasteering or surfing.
Along the way of this excursion, students will improve their English as foreign language.
Together with the fact that we will reach Jersey by ferry, eventually, students will get the feeling of what life means on an island then and today.
