Heilpflanzenkunde – Zur Aktualität der ältesten Medizin der Menschheit. Ein Praxiskurs im Heilpflanzengarten des Gemeinschaftskrankenhaus Herdecke
Herbalism – The actuality of an ancient art of healing. A practical course in the medicinal plant garden at Herdecke Community Hospital
In Europe, the art of healing has developed over three millennia. Its basis is a holistic understanding of the human being and nature, from which various approaches have developed, ranging from humoral pathology to monastic medicine, homeopathic medicine and Kneipp medicine to anthroposophical medicine. Instead of treating individual symptoms, the concepts of therapy are always about bringing the individual constitution of body, mind and soul into balance. Even the ancestors of modern medicine, e.g. the Greek physician Hippocrates of Kos or Hildegard von Bingen, already used the healing powers of plants for their therapies, regardless of whether they were the pleasant effects typical of traditional medicinal herbs and spices or the relatively dangerous effects of poisonous plants. Herbal medicine is one of the world’s oldest systems of medicine, combining the two disciplines of botany and medicine, and perhaps it is so fascinating precisely because the powers of nature are particularly evident here. Herbalists use a variety of plant remedies – leaves, roots, flowers, trees, fungi, algae – to treat every day or common ailments. They prefer to use whole plants and benefit from their synergistic effects rather than isolating or synthesising plant components, as is common in modern pharmacology. This approach provides a safe and effective method of natural health care with few side effects, especially as their practice is based on a holistic philosophy that aims to treat the “whole person” and not just the diagnosis or current symptoms.
