The future is circular! Urban development meets circular economy based on the example of Witten and the surrounding area
Current developments, from climate change and the Covid-19 pandemic to Russia’s war of in Ukraine, are putting new guiding principles for urban and regional development on the agenda. The New Leipzig Charter (BMI 2020) calls for a sustainable, European city in the dimensions of the green, the just, and the productive city, which now consciously takes urban manufacturing into account again. In addition, the circular economy and a city of short distances play a greater role (Gärtner, Schepelmann 2020: 50). Regional material cycles in the sense of “cradle-to-cradle” and value chains as well as local production are gaining in importance. The relocation of production facilities to “low-wage countries” is increasingly viewed critically due to wage dumping and environmental consequences. The return of production, as well as repair, re- and upcycling, redesign and the use of residual materials, even in our neighbourhoods, can ensure that production is cleaner, and CO2 is saved.
The seminar will 1) deal with the question of what is meant by the terms productive city and circular economy; 2) analyse which companies and initiatives are active in Witten in this context; 3) discuss what opportunities and challenges exist for Witten regarding the productive city and circular economy and what measures could be taken to promote them. The focus will also be on areas, properties, and vacancies as well as business start-ups. Finally, we will discuss what contribution we can make to making the city sustainable together.
In addition to the theoretical and conceptual introduction and discussions, the seminar will be illustrated using case studies and excursions in Witten and the surrounding area.
