Between Emotion and Business. Understanding Family Businesses – Lecture Series (International Edition)
The WIFU lecture series presents the topic of "Family Business" from various perspectives. WIFU Professors introduce the topic from their specific research perspective. We further invite colleagues from international research partners to present their findings on family businesses. In the Summer Semester, the lecture series takes place on-site, teaching language is German, and we discuss one specific case. In Winter Semester, we switch to English and go online.
The “family business” is the most common type of business worldwide. In Germany, around 90 percent of all economic organizations are family businesses. These can be small or medium-sized companies or large and globally active companies. Many people also grow up in business families, i.e., in families whose members run these companies or control them as owners.
The seminar is open to all students interested in family business. No previous knowledge is required, and repeat participation is possible.
Dr. Sigrun Caspary
Dr. Sigrun C. Caspary ist seit 2019 als Senior Researcher am Wittener Institut für Familienunternehmen (WIFU) und seit April 2025 Reitaku-Professor of Family Business. Sie leitet das Japan-Projekt zur Untersuchung der Langlebigkeit japanischer Familienunternehmen. Weitere Forschungsthemen sind 'female succession' und Rituale; seit kurzem widmet sie sich auch dem Thema 'sibling co-leadership'. Aus der bisherigen Forschungstätigkeit sind zusätzlich Forschungsfelder wie Regionalentwicklung und Industriepolitik zu nennen. Promoviert hat sie an der Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn zum Thema 'Industriepolitik in der japanischen Luftfahrtindustrie', wofür sie sich mehrere Jahre in Japan aufhielt (Keio University, Hitotsubashi University). Sie spricht fließend Japanisch. Nach einer Tätigkeit bei einem japanischen Bankhaus in Frankfurt kam sie 1997 an die UWH, damals an das Institut für Kulturvergleichende Wirtschaftsforschung, Fakultät für Wirtschaftswissenschaft. Lehrtätigkeiten an anderen Hochschulen hatte sie u.a. an der Universität Trier und an der Frankfurt School of Finance & Management. Die WIFU-Ringvorlesung im STUFU verantwortet sie seit dem Wintersemester 2023/24. Jüngste Publikationen zu Familienunternehmen wie "Erfolgsmuster langlebiger Familienunternehmen in Japan" sind in deutscher und englischer Sprache auf der Seite des WIFU (www.wifu.de) open access zugänglich.
Ziele & Kompetenzen
The WIFU Lecture series deals with family business from an inter-disciplinary perspective, covering the disciplines from WIFU professors and international colleagues. Family business is present in various aspects of daily life, and this seminar increases the understanding of the complexity that results from the overlap of family, management, and ownership. Such knowledge is also helpful for later work relationships.
