Patriarchal Structures – More Than Just the Gender Pay Gap?!
"Patriarchy no longer exists. Women are only treated unequally in the context of the gender pay gap, aren't they?"
Even though women have achieved many significant milestones toward equality throughout history and are equal before the law (Article 2, Paragraph 2 of the German Basic Law), they are not, in fact, equal. However, the term patriarchy no longer adequately captures current gender relations. In academic discourse, terms such as post-patriarchy, neopatriarchy, or the flexible gender order are used.
In this seminar, you will examine the concept of patriarchy and relate it to current cases from the media. In the first part of the double session, we will focus on a specific topic, such as the Gisèle Pelicot case, Colin Fernandez, the Epstein affair, Alexandra Zykunov's book "We've All Been Equal for Ages!", Andrea Böhm's book "Fighting like a Woman", or topics you bring to the table. In the second part of the double session, you will reflect on your impressions and the knowledge you have gained by creating so-called Körperkarten and expressing them artistically.

Objectives & Competences
On the theoretical level, you will have the opportunity to explore the concept of patriarchy and its new terminology and interpretations in light of societal developments. At the same time, you can relate this to cases currently being discussed in the media and, on the practical level, reflect on the knowledge you have gained through your academic studies and process it artistically.
