The objective of the seminar is to explore the relationship between art and organizations through your own projects, both practically—using analog technology only—and theoretically. The course is based on the assumption that art not only reflects social structures—such as organizations—but also actively disrupts, shifts, and helps shape them.

Artists experiment with the question, “how the social is [...] organized [...]” (Holm and Beyes 2022: 227). This expanded concept of art clarifies that artists cannot be understood solely as creators of discrete objects, but rather as initiators of situations, processes, and perceptual arrangements in which people, materials, technology, and space become active participants. Organization is thus both the backdrop and the product of artistic work.

In the winter semester of 2026/27, we will focus on the beginnings of electronic music.

Objectives & Competences

Drawing on the artistic practices of Daphne Oram, Maryanne Amacher, Pierre Henry, and Éliane Radigue, we will examine how electronic music creates, disrupts, and reorganizes social, technical, and aesthetic orders. To this end, we will use exclusively analog technology as a tool for artistic practice. At the same time, we will engage in an in-depth scholarly and textual examination of the connections between art and organization in the work of these four artists.

The seminar concludes with a public event at which participants will present their artwork (object, sculpture, image, or music). In addition, an anthology documenting all contributions will be published.
