Dying, death and bereavement are among the fundamental experiences of our lives, yet they are increasingly shaped by digital technologies. This course invites participants to explore the impact of digitalisation on dying, bereavement, end-of-life planning and the culture of remembrance, whilst developing skills for dealing with mortality on both a personal and societal level. The focus is on concepts of death and grief literacy, as well as questions of self-determination, care and responsibility. Alongside theoretical foundations, practical topics such as hospice and palliative care, living wills and enduring powers of attorney, digital health at the end of life, digital mourning practices and digital legacies are covered. Guest lectures from the fields of hospice work, end-of-life planning and the funeral industry provide insights into different areas of practice.

A central element of the course is the development of a 'suitcase for the final journey', in which personal, social, organisational and digital aspects of end-of-life planning and saying goodbye are reflected upon and brought together. In addition to imparting knowledge, the process aims to provide guidance whilst creating a safe space in which reflective experimentation is possible.

Theresa Sophie Busse

Was motiviert Studierende?

Objectives & Competences

The course focuses on dying, death and bereavement in the context of digital health. It covers concepts of death and grief literacy, social and cultural perspectives on dying and bereavement, hospice and palliative care, living wills and enduring powers of attorney, digital health at the end of life, digital bereavement practices, and issues relating to digital legacies. The course combines academic perspectives with practical applications through the involvement of external experts.

At the knowledge level, students acquire an understanding of the social, legal, ethical and digital aspects of dying, death and grief. They become familiar with key concepts of death and grief literacy and are able to analyse and critically reflect on the opportunities, challenges and conflicting objectives of digitalisation at the end of life.

At the practical level, students develop skills in ethical judgement, in reflecting on their own attitudes towards dying and grief, and in the responsible planning of end-of-life and farewell processes. They learn to view complex issues from different perspectives, to apply academic findings to specific practical situations, and to make informed decisions in the context of digital health. Through the development of a 'suitcase for the final journey', reflective, creative and practical skills are fostered in a hands-on manner.
