UNDERSTANDING MEDIA SEMINAR
Go behind the scenes of the global media landscape, gain in-depth insights from Europe’s leading media experts, and connect with international students.
In times of political upheaval and shifting global power dynamics, media systems across the world are coming under intense scrutiny. Public trust in news is dwindling, and it’s becoming harder to distinguish fact from opinion, independent reporting from hidden agendas. This is where our “Understanding Media Seminar” makes a difference.
ASK THE RIGHT QUESTIONS:
• Who really controls the media you use every day?
• How do these influences shape the information you receive about the world?
• What role do the media play in guiding political direction, democratic processes, and even elections?
• How are emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence altering our media ecosystems—might they transform or disrupt them entirely?
• And, most critically: How can trust in the media be restored?
EXPERT KNOWLEDGE FIRST-HAND
This seminar gives you the chance to engage directly with Europe’s leading media experts, who will join us for each session to explore these pressing issues.
You can look forward to insights from prominent figures such as:
• Rasmus Kleis Nielsen, former Director of the Oxford Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism, University of Oxford
• Mar Cabra, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist (Panama Papers)
• Charlie Beckett, Director of LSE Polis Global JournalismAI Initiative, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE)
• Renate Schröder, Director of the European Federation of Journalists, Brussels
• Marius Dragomir, Director of the Media and Journalism Research Center (MJRC)
• Lars Boering, Director of the European Journalism Centre and former Director of the World Press Photo Award
• Barbara Trionfi, Senior Advisor to the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media
…and many other leading voices in the field.
INTERACTIVE AND INTERNATIONAL
In our hybrid and highly interactive format, you will collaborate with students from other European universities to address critical media challenges. Together, you will examine the risks facing open, democratic discourse and develop potential approaches to fostering a sustainable future for independent media.
No matter your field of study, this seminar will open your eyes to the invisible structures and forces shaping what you read, see, and believe— insights that will serve you well beyond your university years.
We promise: You will be astonished by what’s unfolding just beyond your screens!
