The Urban Solutions Lab in the 2026/27 winter semester aims to develop creative and sustainable solutions to specific challenges facing downtown Bochum. Students from various universities in the Ruhr region (RUB, TU Dortmund, UWH) and disciplines work in interdisciplinary teams (geography; urban planning; social sciences; Stufu) to develop solutions for real-world problems facing the city, the urban economy, and civil society. The accompanying seminar prepares participants for the hackathon both before and after the event.

The Institute for Work and Technology at the Westphalian University of Applied Sciences in Gelsenkirchen is hosting the Urban Solution Lab for the second time — this time in Bochum. The first edition of the Urban Solution Lab took place in Gelsenkirchen in 2025 (www.urbansolutionslab.eu).

This format offers a creative and collaborative approach to problem-solving. Selected institutions from Bochum present current challenges related to sustainable transformation (e.g., utilization of vacant properties, climate adaptation, promotion of technical and social innovations, or addressing poverty), which are tackled during the hackathon over the course of 8 hours.

The results are presented in a pitch to the challenge organizers and the public, and the best teams receive an award.

No special IT or programming skills are required to successfully participate in the hackathon.
