Erinnerung und Demokratie
Sollte deutsche Geschichte und der Holocaust als singluläres Thema bestehen bleiben oder in den großen Zusammenhang von Völkermorden und Kolonialismus eingeordnet werden?
Neben diesen großen Geschichtsthemen stellt sich aber auch die Frage nach persönlichem Erinnern und nach lokaler Geschichte.
Die Veranstaltung wird diese Fragen an Hand von Texten und persönlichen Erfahrungen diskutieren, aber auch mit zwei Exkursionen (Ruhrgebiet) diese Themen zu Fuß erkunden. Auch persönliche Erinnerung und Familien- wie Herkunftsgeschichten können thematisiert werden.
Memory and Democracy
In the seminar we will discuss the following questions: What role do history an memory play in a heterogeneous society? In the face of pressing global problems, is history still a relevant dimension at all and can there be such a thing as “remembering for the future”?
Should German history and the Holocaust remain as a singular topic or should they be placed in the broader context of genocide and colonialism?
In addition to these major historical topics, there is also the question of the role personal memory and local history.
The seminar will discuss these questions on the basis of texts and personal statements, but also explore these questions on foot with two excursions (Ruhr area). Personal memories and family and origin stories can also be discussed.
