Economics with all senses – Experiencing sustainable organizations in context
The economy is not an isolated sphere. Companies and their stakeholders are embedded in diverse social, cultural, and ecological contexts. They influence—and are influenced by—the conditions of life on our planet. The connections between economic activity and the health of natural and social systems are diverse and often complex.
In this seminar, we want to explore together, through a combination of perception and theoretical reflection, how economic activities are interwoven with issues of sustainability, social interaction, and individual and collective development. We are interested not only in what companies do, but also in how they do it—what values, structures, decisions, and dynamics are expressed in their actions.
Joos van den Dool
Joos van den Dool (1977) ist Referent für Lehrentwicklung im WittenLab. Er arbeitet täglich daran, gemeinsam Strukturen aufzubauen, die unsere Welt schöner, gerechter und zukunftsfähiger machen und beschäftigt sich mit der Frage, welche Lehre es dafür heute und morgen braucht. Als studierter Architekt und Stadtplaner begreift er Fragen und Herausforderungen als Gestaltungsaufgaben – eine Haltung, die seine über 20-jährige internationale Erfahrung als Berater und Moderator co-kreativer und partizipativer Prozesse in Wirtschaft, Bildung und Verwaltung prägt. Eigene Initiativ- und Gründungserfahrung fließen dabei ebenso ein.
Neben der UWH arbeitet er als freiberuflicher Prozessbegleiter für MYZELIUM.org und Trigon Entwicklungsberatung und ehrenamtlich als Vorstand der Fair-Bio-eG und Beirat der Sekem-Freunde Deutschland.
Friederike Mainz
Friederike Mainz arbeitet zu Fragen der sozial-ökologischen Transformation. Als Rechtsanwältin und Geschäftsführerin hat sie langjährige Erfahrung mit der Gestaltung von Eigentumsstrukturen – und stieß dabei immer wieder auf deren Potenzial und Grenzen sowie auf die entscheidende Rolle menschlicher Faktoren für deren Wirksamkeit. Diesem Spannungsfeld ist sie systematisch nachgegangen durch eine Dissertation zu treuhänderischen Eigentumsstrukturen sowie umfangreiche Fortbildungen in Meditations- und Selbstführungspraxis, die aktiv in ihre Arbeit einfließen. Aktuell ist sie Teil des Teams der World Goetheanum Association sowie der Geschäftsführung des Forum Kreuzberg, Berlin. Sie lebt mit ihrem Partner und ihren vier Kindern in Berlin.
Objectives & Competences
We want to examine various dimensions of sustainability based on two company visits. Analyzing our experiences from different perspectives and disciplines will enable us to identify aspects of how corporate realities (can) contribute to our current challenges and solutions.
The focus will be on the following questions:
• How and through what do we experience sustainability in different organizations? : As visitors, how do we experience the interaction between people, structures, and the environment?
• Which dimensions of sustainability become visible—ecological, social, cultural, economic?
• Which forms of organization, cooperation, and decision-making shape everyday life on site?
• And: What role do individual attitudes, motives, and experiences play in these contexts?
We see this seminar as a learning space where different perspectives can coexist and where we work together to sort, interpret, and discuss our observations. In doing so, we draw on methods of interdisciplinary analysis, dialogical feedback, and plural economics.
You will learn to recognize the connections between different areas of life, such as economics, ecology, social issues, and human development (culture), and experience the role of individuals and structures in organizations for sustainable development. After visiting the companies, we will have the opportunity to share our impressions with the people at the companies we visited and thus initiate reflection within these companies.
