Artificial intelligence in the arts: competitor or companion?
Artificial intelligence is considered a game-changer in the world of work. While some view this development with concern, others welcome it with enthusiasm. The arts are also affected by this. In a decade in which generative AI is being used to create increasingly astonishing images, videos, texts, and music with creative and even artistic merit, the question arises as to how artists should respond to this technology. Is the traditional view of art as the epitome of human individuality and originality being shaken? Or can machine learning systems be used as productive tools in artistic practice to explore the relationship and expanded collaborations between humans and machines? We will focus on contemporary art. The overarching question is always: What can we learn through art about our current and future use of AI systems?
