Artificial intelligence will have a significant impact on all of our lives. "It is therefore essential to deal with it early and thoroughly.” (KI Campus, introductory course)

The seminar brings together three central social trends: digitalization using the example of artificial intelligence in different fields of application, self-determined learning and learning with free educational materials, the so-called Open Education Resources. The common approach to understanding artificial intelligence is interdisciplinary. IT knowledge is not required and not acquired.

For each subject relevant to the discipline, there are different starting points to reflect on the crucial problem facing humanity, how we will and want to live tomorrow. Technology assessment as a methodological approach is a transdisciplinary approach that deals with the connections between technology and society in a case-oriented and practice-oriented manner and reflects them systematically.

The aim is to understand what artificial intelligence is, why it is called intelligent and how it learns to perceive applications that are taken for granted and used in everyday life, as well as to reflect on current and future fields of application, e.g. in medicine, care, business, ethics and education. The aim is to develop AI competence, to recognize AI opportunities and limits and to be able to realistically assess reports about it.

Einer meiner thematischen Schwerpunkte der der Zusammenhang von Technik und Gesellschaft, hier am Beispiel Künstlicher Intelligenz. Die erste Assoziation zu KI ist oft immer technisch geprägt und fokussiert nicht auf individuelle Einflussnahme insbesondere als Nicht-Informatiker*innen. Es ist mir daher ein Anliegen, Studierende, die künftig Aufgaben in der Gesellschaft wahrnehmen, technik- und datenkompetent zu machen und von einer technikdeterministischen Sichtweise, in der die technische Entwicklung vorangeht und die Gesellschaft hinterherhinkt, wegzubewegen, und zwar in die Richtung, eigene Ideen in dem Feld zu entwickeln bzw. Ansatzpunkte für das eigene Handeln zu erkennen und die persönliche Betroffenheit zu reflektieren.

Objectives & Competences

All students recognize connections between technology and society using the example of AI and can explain these from the perspectives of the sociology of technology using the example of the interaction between humans and machines based on selected scenarios.

Furthermore, they are able to classify the reporting on AI into realistic and exaggerated contributions, to use important terms in the field of AI and ML unerringly and to name the risks and opportunities of AI. They learn to assess the impact of AI on themselves and their own environment. They acquire AI competence: Knowing application scenarios/possibilities in different fields of action and assessing opportunities, consequences & risks.
