Hands-on thinking: Creating biodiversity at Günnemann-Kotten

How can we create sustainable systems through our own actions and actively contribute to the preservation of our planet and humanity? What does biodiversity actually mean, and how can we strengthen it? How does the willingness to change and take action for sustainable development emerge?

These and other questions are what we want to explore, first-hand, through active experience at Günnemann-Kotten. This semester, we are dedicating ourselves to the task of developing Günnemann-Kotten into a so-called “stepping stone biotope” in order to create a habitat for various species and enhance the farm ecologically.

Are you interested in topics such as biodiversity, sustainability, and ecosystems, and would you like to spend three seminar days outdoors and literally get your hands dirty? Then this is the right seminar for you. There are no limits to your creativity and your own ideas; you can contribute in a variety of ways.

Ich arbeite als Researcherin im Forschungsbereich „Innovationslabore“ in der Abteilung „Nachhaltiges Produzieren und Konsumieren” am Wuppertal Institut für Klima, Umwelt, Energie. Das bedeutet konkret, dass ich mich damit beschäftigte, wie wir eine nachhaltigere Welt und Gesellschaft für uns alle gestalten können und dabei auf beiden Seiten, nämlich einerseits in der Produktion und andererseits auf der Konsumseite, ansetzen. Den größten Hebel sehe ich in der Bildung, weshalb mein Forschungsschwerpunkt Bildung für Nachhaltige Entwicklung (BNE) ist. Mich begeistert es, auf transdisziplinäre Weise gemeinsam mit verschiedensten Menschen Zukunftskompetenzen zu entwickeln und dabei selbst ständig Neues zu lernen.

Thematic focus points:

Sustainable development, biodiversity, systems thinking, urban development in real world labs, transdisciplinary

Learning outcomes:

The students are familiar with the concept of sustainable development and understand ecological issues. They not only have a general understanding of biodiversity, but also know about biodiversity and its relevance specifically at Günnemann-Kotten. Students are able to independently develop and implement strategies and measures to increase biodiversity at Günnemann-Kotten and enhance the ecological value of the farm. In doing so, they are able to address the topic in a transdisciplinary manner, in collaboration with various stakeholder groups. The students understand complex systems and are able to work with the interconnections and properties of the systems at Günnemann-Kotten. They act self-effectively and have learned or developed important future skills.
