Aesthetics of Change - A Photographic Approach to Sustainability –
How can sustainability be made visible with the means of photography? This practice-oriented seminar combines a critical examination of sustainability discourses with artistic photography. We begin by examining theoretical foundations e.g., of sustainable mobility, consumption, nutrition, economics, and trade. We then explore how sustainability can be represented in visual media, particularly through photography. Which aesthetic strategies and narratives shape our view of the environment, consumption, and change? Two image discussions will be held using the photographs taken during the photo shoots and excursions. Participants are asked to bring approximately 20 printed 10x15 cm images to the respective event dates.
If possible, a selection of the works will be exhibited at the University Witten/Herdecke.

Objectives & Competences
The focus of our seminar, however, is our own photographic work. Participants will develop their own individual or collaborative projects that creatively and critically capture ecological, social, or cultural aspects of sustainability. Whether documentary, experimental, or staged, the medium of photography serves as a tool for reflecting on and shaping sustainable visions of the future.
Participants will actively engage in the discourse on sustainability in the context of visual culture within the framework of the main topic. The seminar promotes both conceptual and creative skills and trains the ability to translate socially relevant topics into artistic forms of expression.
