Goethes Faust and the relation to integrative medicine – Excursion in Weimar
250 years after Goethe's arrival at the residence, the Klassik Stiftung Weimar´s (Weimar Classic Foundation) theme year is dedicated to one of the greatest works of German-language literature. As part of the “Faust Year,” the exhibition at the Schiller Museum offers new insights into Goethe's magnum opus. This excursion will focus not only on the work “Faust” but also on Goethe's understanding of health and healing. He was enthusiastic about the teachings of the “miraculous doctor” Dr. Hahnemann and described the effects of homeopathy as something he had “vividly felt.”
The exhibition visit will be complemented by a tour to the Goethe and Schiller Archive (the oldest literary archive in Germany), where Goethe's original manuscripts are preserved. In cooperation with the Goethe and Schiller Archive, Dr. Yvonne Pietzsch, subproject manager for the Goethe Letters, will discuss Goethe's homeopathic treatment and Bettina von Arnim's experiences in her lecture..
Prof. Dr. David Martin
David Martin, geboren 1973 in den USA, aufgewachsen in den USA, Frankreich und England. Als Facharzt für Kinder- und Jugendmedizin und pädiatrischer Endokrinologe, Diabetologe, Hämatologe und Onkologe ist er Inhaber des Gerhard Kienle Lehrstuhls für Medizintheorie, Integrative und Anthroposophische Medizin an der Universität Witten/Herdecke www.uni-wh.de/gkls. Dort leitet er auch das Institut für Integrative Medizin www.uni-wh.de/ifim und ist Ko-Leiter des Forschung- und Lehrzentrums Herdecke.
Dr. Sophia Johnson
Ich bin Alumna der UWH, Ärztin (mit dem Schwerpunkt integrative Medizin) und habe mich wissenschaftlich mit Aspekten der Frauenmedizin (u.a. Grundlagenforschung im Placenta-Labor) beschäftigt. Mich hat das Studium an der UWH geprägt, begeistert und zu einer freiheitlich denkenden Medizinerin gemacht. Das Denken „Out of the box“ und die echte Begegnung auf Herzensebene sind mir in meiner Arbeit wichtig.

Objectives & Competences
The work Faust, personalities of the literary era of Classicism and Enlightenment, medical history, therapies in the 18th/19th century.
Examination of a standard work of German literature, as well as figures from the “Weimar Classicism” period such as Hufeland, Goethe, and Schiller. Also insights into medical history documents and original manuscripts.
Critical reading and evaluation of literature, familiarization with and assessment of historical documents (manuscripts) and their relevance to contemporary medical issues.
