Argument and Adrenalin. Discussion as an Epistemic Method
Discussing is a skill that must be learned. How can we continue to argue reasonably when we have serious differences of opinion—whether political, personal, religious, or moral—and everyone is convinced that not all of their beliefs can be equally correct? Get out of your own bubble! In the Stufu seminar, we will try out in practice whether there are rules of argumentation that help us to engage with each other discursively. This offers great opportunities for insight. We will also familiarize ourselves with some theoretical views on what argumentation is all about (from Aristotle to Habermas).
Prof. Dr. Matthias Kettner
Matthias Kettner ist Professor für Philosophie und Diplompsychologe. Promotion 1987 in Frankfurt bei Apel und Habermas über Hegel, Habilitation 1999 über Diskursethik. Fellow in Forschungsgruppen am Kulturwissenschaftliche Institut (KWI) in Essen. Seit 2002 Lehrstuhl für Praktische Philosophie an der Universität Witten/Herdecke, bis 2020 in der Fakultät für Kulturreflexion, dann Seniorprofessor im Departement für Philosophie, Politik und Ökonomik. Forschungsschwerpunkte: Praktische Ethik, Rationalitätstheorie, Psychoanalyse, institutionelle Pathologien, Digitalisierung als Kulturprozess. Von 2019-2022 Leiter einer Forschungsgruppe „Philosophische Digitalisierung“ am Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS) in Bochum.
Matthias Kettner is professor of philosophy at the Department for Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Witten/Herdecke University (www.uni-wh.de). Diploma in psychology and a PhD in philosophy (Thesis advisors: Karl-Otto Apel and Jürgen Habermas) at Johann-Wolfgang-Goethe-University, Frankfurt. Current research interests: Realistic discourse ethics; theory of socio-cultural pathologies as part of Critical Theory; digital culture, especially algorithm accountability and digital ethics; non-relativistic theory of cultural processes. Recently he has completed a research project about philosophical approaches to digitalization and artificial intelligence at the Center for Advanced Internet Studies at Bochum (CAIS).
