The natural temporality of living beings is primarily characterised by cyclical processes and rhythms, which are also expressed in subjective physical experience. This applies, for example, to the heartbeat, breathing, sleep-wake rhythm, and the daily cycle of hormone release. Drives and satisfaction, movement and rest, exertion and recovery also repeat themselves cyclically.

This cyclical structure of lived time contrasts with the order of linear (clock) time, which has become increasingly established in the natural sciences and the everyday world of Western societies since modern times. It is characterized by growing acceleration, the abolition of rhythms, and the consumption of that natural resources on which life processes depend.

Prof. Dr. med. Friedrich Edelhäuser ist Neurologe, Chefarzt der Abteilung für Frührehabilitation am Gemeinschaftskrankenhaus Herdecke. Kollegiale Leitung des Integrierten Begleitstudiums Anthroposophische Medizin. Ich interessiere mich für den Zusammenhang von Wahrnehmen und Bewegen, Introspektionsforschung (Erste-Person-Perspektive), moderne aktivitäts- und teambasierte Unterrichtsdidaktik, Teambildungs-, Aus- und Weiterbildungsfragen, One Health, Planetary Health und ökologische Medizin.

Objectives & Competences

The aim of the conference is to first examine the dialectic of the three principles of time in general terms and then to focus on their specific manifestations, particularly in medicine, education, academic studies and biographical development. The conference will address conflicts and crises as well as the potential and possibilities for change offered by the different orders of time.
